Thanks to everyone for your amazing work over the last 5 months we have been involved in numerous activities throughout the year.
Moorditj Keila Junior Basketball Club united with Perth Redbacks Basketball Club, Manning Magics Basketball Club, St Norbert’s College Basketball Club and South Perth Basketball Club and the City of Victoria Park Recreations Centre to celebrate the National Sorry Day which is an Australia-wide observance held on May 26 each year. This day gives people the chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities. Stolen generations refer to Indigenous Australians who were forcibly removed from their families and communities.
Moorditj Keila men’s group and Southcare Aboriginal Family Support Coordinator Garry Gower meet each Friday and do voluntary gardening for families that need support. The men in the group mentor young men that join the group and have fellowship throughout the day together. The men also supported Waterford Plaza plant 1500 plants in their garden and received a donation for gardening equipment.
Djeran Aboriginal Youth Camp and YWAM Youth Breakfast
Moorditj Keila sent 25 youth from our Basketball Club to the Youth with a Mission (YWAM) Djeran camp this year and they had an amazing time. The Djeran Camp is an Aboriginal Christian Youth Camp and it runs for a week and YWAM and Djeran staff run the camp with lots of sports, music, crafts, games, adventure, sharing of God’s Word, testimonies, and inspirational speakers. There was a Noongar Elders welcome and address, much hanging out, and of course great food shared! The camp was so excellent that the kids didn’t want to come home and MK staff and Djeran staff didn’t want it to end there and so we have now decided in partnership to run a breakfast named ‘ Moorditj Merenj’ (good food). The camp will run once a month and it’s a time of coming together and supporting the youth, building the family, the tribe of Champions for Jesus.
So for the first breakfast WYAM cooked up a feast of sausages, bacon, eggs, pancakes, fruit, yoghurt, toast, vegemite, jam, honey, cereals, milk, OJ. Enough for all. Families of the youth were invited as well as Elder Mr Cedric Jacobs.
